Anthropometrical
The use of human body measurement for use in comparison.
 
Apron  
Waterproof material that wraps around the cockpit of a woodstrip kayak and the paddler, usually attaching to the cockpit coaming, to keep water out of the cockpit.
 
Beam  
The breadth of a wood strip kayak at the widest point.
    
Bow  
The front section of a wood strip kayak.
    
Bulkhead  
A partition that divides a kayak or plane into compartments.
    
Chine
top
Any corner instead of a curve in the cross section view of the woodstrip kayak.
    
Cockpit
top
An area in a kayak toward the stern, lower than the rest of the deck, from which the vessel is steered. Specifically, the large center opening in a kayak.
    
Coaming
top
A raised rim or border around an opening designed to keep out water. Typically found around the cockpit of a woodstrip kayak.
    
Deck
top
The upper half of a kayak extending horizontally from one side to the other. Kayaks typically have rounded, flat or ridged decks.
    
Hatch
top
A kayak's compartment. Kayaks can have bow and stern hatches for access to storage areas in the bow and stern.
    
Hull
top
The basic frame or body of a kayak. Simply, refers specifically to the lower half of the kayak.
    
Keel
top
The principal structural member of a kayak, running lengthwise along the center line from bow to stern, to which the frames are attached.
    
Keel Line

The profile of the keel.
    
Rigging

The system of ropes on the deck of a woodstrip kayak used to stow gear and in self rescue maneuvers.
    
Rocker
top
The amount of curved form in the keel of a kayak. For kayaks the more rocker the easier it is to turn and harder it is to keep straight.
    
Sheer

The upward curve or amount of upward curve of the longitudinal lines of a kayak's hull as viewed from the side.
    
Stability
top
The ability of a kayak to maintain equilibrium or resume its original, upright position after being moved by the sea or strong winds.
    
Stern
top
The rear part of a wood strip kayak.
    
Tracking
top
How straight a kayak moves as it is paddled.
    
Water Line Length
top
The length of the kayak directly at the waterline.
    
Weathercocking
top
To have a tendency to veer in the direction of the wind.
